Academy withdraws pupils from A-level exams over bad mocks

Students at an academy in London were withdrawn from A-level assessments once they did badly in mock exams.

ExamStudents at UCL Academy said they now feared having to defer their university programs, while others fear that they may pay about £450 to sit down an exam someplace else.
The Association of School and College Leaders defined it as “quite unethical behavior.”
The faculty said it has “robust plans in the vicinity” to assist students. “In a few instances, this takes the shape of a further year inside the sixth form to overcome something limitations there are,” it introduced. “Our very experienced careers adviser and our pupil wellbeing carrier is core to this help.”

Zehra – whose surname we aren’t using – advised the BBC’s Victoria Derbyshire program that she and other college students had been emailed during the Easter holidays pronouncing they were withdrawn from their chemistry checks. “I even have fitness troubles, but they failed to care. There became no consideration.” She stated she had to visit the university in September; however, now she turned into going through rejecting those or deferring for any other 12 months.

“I already have anxiety and health issues, and this made it lots worse,” she added.
She said there had been “true motives” why her February mock examination had now not gone “as well as it can have” and that it was unfair to withdraw her. UCL Academy, which’s primarily based in Swiss Cottage, said: “any selection to withdraw a scholar from an exam is a tough one for us to take and is one we make working with a scholar and their family.”

‘Discourteous’

Geoff Barton, popular secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders, stated it was “pretty annoying and pretty unethical behavior” with the aid of the academy.
“It seems discourteous being achieved thru email,” he brought.
“All that guidance has suddenly come to nothing.
“Schools will continually have access necessities to take care of, and they’ll have continuation grades on the end of Year 12 to continue to thirteen, but here [the students] have got to the eleventh hour and been instructed this. This appears totally unacceptable.”
The academy stated, “any pupil at risk of now not passing turned into identified early within the college yr. This brought about conferences with parents and teachers to flag the concern and agree on a plan of assistance and action. Targets have been agreed, and motion necessary to fulfill them have been put in the vicinity”.
“If a scholar felt they had been nonetheless in a function to attain a pass, we persevered to aid them to a final assessment in April.
“In special occasions, we agreed to increase this into the Easter holiday to present students the great risk viable.
“We retain to provide help and guidance to individual students.”

A 2nd student, Neville, told the Victoria Derbyshire program he turned into being withdrawn from his maths exam as he changed into “underperforming inside the mocks.”
“Two weeks later, they then did it for chemistry, too,” he delivered.
He said he become having to pay to do the checks externally, at a value of at least £450 according to the problem.
“It’s tousled my revision. All of this has triggered a lot of pressure for me to try to simply discover somewhere to take a seat on my checks, and I have not been able to revise as a whole lot.

“The school did not offer any support on what to do next. It’s lousy.
“It’s certainly knocked my confidence. I’ve begun doubting myself.”
UCL Academy said 97% of its A-stage checks would be taken as deliberate.
“Only in man or woman situations would a selection be taken to withdraw a scholar from an examination or suggest a switch to an AS exam.
“We make selections based totally on the personal needs of college students. If a student’s checks display over time that they may be now not passing the path, or if a student increases private circumstances that mean a deferral is extra appropriate, then withdrawal is probably considered.
“Not to accomplish that may want to probably restriction future university packages.”
