John Tauranac: My name is John Tauranac. I am the dean of the Syracuse University School of Architecture.
A couple of years ago, I was a practicing architect in New York City and was also teaching at Columbia University. And then, in 2015, I received an invitation from the president of Syracuse University to come and serve as dean of the school of architecture.
So I went to Syracuse University and started in the fall of 2016.
One of the things I’ve always liked about Syracuse University is that it’s really a great city. So I like being around the city. I enjoy walking around the campus and the city.
I also like that the university is located in a beautiful part of the country. And it’s a vibrant city with a lot of culture and arts.
Another thing I like about Syracuse is that it’s an urban university. We have a lot of urban planning; we have a lot of very urban-focused programs.
We’ve got an urban practice here. We’ve got a master of urban planning program. We’ve got a master of the urban design program. So we’re focused on the city and the urban environment.
We also have a master of architectural history and theory program. So we have a really good focus on history and theory.
That’s important to me. I love learning about the history of design. I love learning about the history of architecture.
